The idea to create the botanical garden dates back to pre-revolutionary Dnepropetrovsk. The place to create it was chosen in the southwest of Sobornaya Mountain (Cathedral Mountain), in the steppe near the City Dachas. In 1910 the city officials granted a small plot of land to the Ministry of Agriculture, where the Botanical Garden was created twenty years later. Nowadays this is a favorite place for all citizens of Dnepropetrovsk. Recently Gagarin Park joined it and the territory of the garden has nearly doubled.
Botanical garden was created by brothers Reinhard, who founded Ekaterinoslav University in 1918. Leonid Vladimirovitch has made an enormous contribution to ridding the city of malaria, and Alexander Vladimirovitch has devoted himself to the study of plant physiology. It was on his initiative in 1929 to make the decision to open the botanical garden in Dnepropetrovsk.
In 1931 the staff of the Department of Botany and its students began the first planting of trees. Three years later there appeared visible results of their efforts: the garden has grown and it was constantly updated with new plants. Now there are 165 species of trees, 60 of which had never before grown on the territory of Dnepropetrovsk region.
Professor A. Reinhard became the first director of the Botanical Garden. In 1933 the garden was granted the title of the research division of Dnepropetrovsk National University, and since then it has become a scientific and practical basic for the students in biology.
The founder of the garden willed to b buried in his creation. His last wish was fulfilled: a small hill with a monument in the form of granite tree is located near the greenhouse.
During the postwar building the Botanical Garden has become an oasis in the heart of the industrial complex; its collection of plants is constantly updated.
Now there are 6 laboratories in the Botanical Garden, and in 1996 the President of Ukraine confirmed the status of the garden as the reserve area.
