Kharkov Cascade stairs or Cascade is located in the western part of the city park named after T.G. Shevchenko. It’s the name of the fountain, which was donated to the city for the celebration of its 300 anniversary in 1954. Why the cascade has the date 1955 – nobody has the answer, neither historians, nor experts. The architect of the Cascade stairs was A.S. Mayak, the engineering works were assigned to F.I. Savuskan. The grand ceremonies, dedicated to the opening of Cascade, were timed to two memorable dates: the anniversary of the city and the 300 anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine and Russia.
During the construction of the Cascade there emerged several problems, the most important among which was the acute lack of money. The financial issue was resolved by a miracle, but the reconstruction of pre-revolutionary stairs is a very complicated problem, so it was decided to erect a completely new structure, which, according to experts, will not require reconstruction during the next 10 years. The repair of the Cascade stairs was carried out by the city not 10, but 50 years later: in 2004 there were carried out restoration works of one of the main attractions of Kharkov.
Cascade is one of the most beautiful places in Kharkov. From the upper deck there is an amazing wide panorama of the city. In summer the residents and visitors of the city come here for the sake of the heat; in spring, autumn and winter they enjoy the spectacular views of the city.
