Small Southern Children’s Railroad in Kharkov is a subdivision of Southern Railroad. Young railroaders undergo their theoretical and practical training and education here. The Children’s Railroad is a narrow gauge railroad and connects the Gorky Park with the Forest Park, crossing Sokolniki. It’s altogether 3,6 km long.
The building of the Children’s Railroad in Kharkov dates from the year 1940. The idea of its creation has been offered by young communists of Southern Railroad and Kharkov Institute of Railroad Transportation Engineers. In the years of the Great Patriotic War the railroad was completely destroyed, and on August, 25th, 1945 it was put into operation again after recovery efforts.
In the years 1941 – 1943 German-fascist invaders made mass executions of undergrounders, hostages and civilians at the Small Southern Railroad. In the 70-ies the Memorial to Victims of the Great Patriotic War, located on the way of ferrying a rake, was erected in honor of these people.
The railroad construction through the Forest Park started in May 2010. It was decided to cut over about 500 trees for realizing the project. However, city public organizations argued against these actions. There were a lot of meetings, demonstrations and hearings, connected with this project. But finally the railroad was built and put into operation on August, the 23rd, 2010.
