Church of St. Archangel Michael is located in Lviv, on Vinnichenko Street 22, and is a Greek-Catholic Church. The buildings of the temple and monastery were built in the middle of XVII century, but in the next centuries, their architecture and interior experienced many changes.
Cathedral of St. Archangel Michael has the imprint of the early Baroque. The interior of the church is decorated with the most beautiful frescoes by the famous Italian artist Giuseppe Pedretti, dates back to the first half of XVIII century.
The church and monastery went through many difficult years: first, reform of Emperor Joseph II, which closed the monastery, but the cathedral functioned until 1934. After it there was the period of Soviet Authority, which arranged hostel in the building of the monastery due to the policy of atheism, and the building of the temple – in the warehouse. Then there was the difficult 1983, when one of the parts of the monastery was occupied by the KGB, and, finally, 1991-1992, the year of the proclamation of independence of Ukraine. In this period, the Church decided to withdraw from the Underground; monastery buildings went under the control of the monks of the Assumption Student Lavra, which founds the student monastery of St. Joseph.
Currently, the Church of St. Archangel Michael is known throughout the world with its male chorus "Blagovest". The idea of creating of the chorus was proposed by Abbot of Assumption Union Lavra, hieromonk Sebastian Stepan Dmitruh. Since the foundation day of "Blagovest" and up to this day, the head of the choir is the famous choral conductor Vladimir Golovko. The chorus is not only occupied with the liturgical singing, its repertoire also includes works of famous classics of world music and Ukrainian folk songs and carols. Due to the high skill and excellent performance, "Blagovest" participates in liturgies and concerts not only throughout Ukraine, but throughout the world.
