The first church, which was located on the site of today's Intercession Cathedral, was built in 1778. It was mostly of wood, so it was decided to dismantle it and build a new temple on this sacred place.
On May 5, 1886 at the former site of the Church of Intercession there was founded Intercession Cathedral, the history of the existence of which ended when the Bolsheviks came to power: in the 30-ies of XX century they destroyed the holy temple.
Intercession Cathedral in its external appearance and location is identical to the Alexander Cathedral (the temple was named so because of the old name of the city Zaporozhye).
In 1993 it was decided to recreate the Cathedral of Intercession in its original form. This required the people, developing the project of building the temple, to learn a great variety of historical archives in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
The famous architect Dmitry Romanov found in the Synodal Archives of St. Petersburg the photos of the Cathedral, which was acting on the site of locally rebuilding of the temple before the October Revolution of 1917. The planners have studied in detail the architectural features of the church at Sobornaya Square, and finally they were able to work together to develop drafts for the construction of a new church. The construction of the temple has lasted for 14 years.
Intercession Cathedral with the altitude of 53 meters is considered one of the most beautiful in Ukraine and the jewel of the city of Zaporozhye. It was consecrated on 17th of October 2007. This ceremony coincided with the celebration of the Day of Liberation of Zaporozhye from the Nazis and the Day of the Zaporozhye Cossacks. After the liturgy there was a solemn procession, during which there was consecrated the monument of the Blessed Virgin Mary – Intercession, located at the entrance to the cathedral.
