Monument to Taras Shevchenko in Lviv appeared recently. The ceremonial opening took place on 24 August 1992 and was timed to celebrate the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of Ukraine.
The official decision to build the monument was accepted by the city authorities on 22 June 1987. However the regional and national competitions did not afford to determine the winner. But due to the fact that the public demanded the acceleration of the construction process, the jury settled on the project by architects Y. Dyba and Y. Kromeya and sculptors V. and A. Suhorskiy, calling it a "relatively better".
4 years later after the official opening of the monument, three was held the opening of twelve meters element of the monument - a bronze "Wave of National Revival", which embodies the national spirit of Ukrainians.
The monument is located on the main street of the city, Prospect of Freedom. It is surrounded with flowers, beautiful light amazes the eyes. Near the monument there are organized festive celebrations for residents and guests of Lviv, there are protests and memory actions, here come the newlyweds to lay flowers and make memorable wedding pictures.
Several years ago the social organizations alongside with the city authorities protected the "sacred place", where is situated the monument to the great Kobzar. It was made the official decision to prohibit drink alcoholic beverages near the monument. Police constantly controls the execution of the order and politely asks to get rid of drinks near the monument.
Monuments to T.G. Shevchenko have been appeared in different cities of Ukraine in recent years. People remember the great Kobzar, the poet, writer, artist, thinker, finally, rebel and hero.
