Kiev received the honorable name of Hero-city over 50 years ago, in 1961. At the same time the capital of Soviet Socialist Ukraine was given the second Order of V. Lenin's.
A Decree of Presidium of the USSR Supreme Council, which was issued in May of 1965, awarded Kiev with a Gold Star medal for outstanding service, heroism, courage and bravery that Kiev workers have displayed while fighting against the German invaders. Participants of the defense of Kiev were given a medal For the Defense of Kiev, which was founded by the officials in 1965. In this way the memory about infinite courage and selfless resistance of Kiev defenders carries on living in the hearts of future generations of Ukrainians.
In Pobedy square, where two most remarkable highways (now known as Pobedy avenue) of Soviet Kiev used to start, in May of 1982 people installed an obelisk. It was devoted to the Hero-city Kiev. The obelisk is a pylon that is 40 meters tall. If you count in the foundation of the monument, the obelisk ends up to be 43 meters tall. The pylon is covered in white marble, and the top is decorated with a large gilded star. On the obelisk there is a bronze embossing message left by sculptors: “To the Hero-city Kiev”. Also there you can see the highest awards of the Soviet Union – Gold Star and the Order of V. Lenin's.
Obelisk is an art work created by architects L. Semesyuk and V. Lashko.
