Kharkov is a rather young Ukrainian city, which is already second in size and population after Kiev. However, during its 350 years history Kharkov managed to form a big number of attractions. One of them is the old university building that is located in University street, 16. The building is situated by the road and is well observed from the University hill.
The building was constructed in 1766-1777 by the project of architect M. Tikhmenev. Originally it was going to be a house for the Governor-General. In 1805-1958 the Kharkov university was located there. The old building is constructed according to classicism style. The shape of the plastered brick building is rather peculiar: in front there is a rectangle with two rounded corners in the backyard; the other two corners - risolits that flank the main façade. It is a two-storied building with flat ceilings, and the central part of the facade is decorated with a balcony on the brackets.
The floors are separated by a fairly simple cornice, but pilasters with molded garlands, which are suspended from the volutes of capitals, are giving the building some extra sophistication. The old university building is the first example of a classicism construction in Kharkov. It started the future University architecture group.
Nowadays the Ukrainian Engineering and Pedagogical Academy is located in the building. Students get to experience the spirit of Kharkov history every day. Tourists can visit the building as part of the “Old city” tour, which is becoming more and more popular both with foreign tourists and Ukrainian travelers who discover the wonders of Ukraine.
