Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was placed in the middle of the square in Lviv in 1862 and it decorated this place until 1950. The Countess Severin Badeni financed the placing of this church monument; the sculptor was I. Hauptmann. The very square was officially renamed in the Mariyskaya (or Maryatskaya) in 1871.
In 1997 there was held the reconstruction of the Virgin Mary Statue, as a result it was placed inside the fountain, built in 1904. The pool is round and built of stones, and the fountain is decorated with masks of dolphins. The sculptural composition is located at the beginning of the boulevard and attracts many visitors and faithful citizens every day. However, few know that the original sculpture by I. Hauptmann is located in the church of St. Andrew in Lviv, which was formerly the Church of the Bernardine Monastery.
Lviv citizens are very religious people. Few of them will pass by the Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and will not stop or will not pay any attention to it. Most often you can see the citizens, hurrying about their business, who will stay near the sacred sculpture for a few minutes to pray. And there age doesn’t matter at all - here you can see a number of youth with the elderly people, children alongside with their parents. No one desecrates a place with swearing or drinking of alcoholic beverages, indecent behavior or overly loud laugh. Near the statue there is the atmosphere of piece and convergence to God; the fountain is constantly surrounded with fresh alive flowers.
