Zaporozhye is an old city in Ukraine, situated on the Dnieper River, still keeping the history and legends of the Ukrainian Cossacks and Zaporozhian Sich. Today it is a major industrial and cultural center in the southern Ukraine. We offer you the rating must see places in Zaporozhye.
1. Khortytsya island
The largest island on the Dnieper River, which is considered the stronghold of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Here, in the XVI century was located the Zaporozhian Sych, which is today recognized as the national reserve of Ukraine. Here you can find the Museum of the History of Zaporozhian Cossacks, where you can see the clothes and arms of the Cossacks, the objects from their life, houses and Cossack fortress. On the Island has remained intact the famous Zaporozhian oak, which is around 700 years old. Khortytsya is one of the seven wonders of Ukraine.
2. Horse Theatre
Horse Theatre is located on the Khortytsya island. Here are hosted a variety of staged horseback stunts, which demonstrate the ability and strength of the Cossacks. Following the presentation visitors can ride a horse, buy souvenirs, or obtain a master-class in the art of the blacksmith or pottery.
3. "Scythian camp"
The museum complex "Scythian camp" is located at the top of the island of Khortytsya. It is the largest surviving on the island Scythian burial mounds "Zorov grave." On the island of Khortytsya there are about 130 mounds and 28 cemeteries. However, after the ruthless actions of the Soviet government it has been possible to restore all three graves and 8 burial mounds. Here you can find large stone artifacts: millstones, roller or harman, stupas, Scythian statues.
4. Cossack boat "Chaika"
Cossack boat "Chaika" ("the Seagull") sank in 1739. And from the bottom of the Dnieper the hull has been lifted in 1998. The remnants were restored. Historians say that the real museum of vintage ships is still located at the bottom of the Dnieper.
5. Antique Car Museum
Here is the collection of vintage vehicles of domestic and foreign production. There are 22 exhibits from the 30s’ to the 60s’ of 20 th century. Here are cars such as: "Willis", "Dodge", the whole family of "Ural-ZIS" ZIS-5”, ZIS-6 "Katyusha". All vehicles are in working state, and regularly take part in exhibitions and retro cars rally.
6. Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral
The first building was constructed in 1778, but since the building was made of wood, in 1886 it has been fully reconstructed and made out of stone. All the buildings were completely destroyed by the Bolsheviks in the twentieth century. Complete reconstruction of the ruined cathedral was conducted from 1993 to 2011. Now the Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral is a 36 meters high temple, and one of the symbols of the city.
7. Music Fountain on the Festival Square
Music Fountain on the Festival Square is the cultural heart of the city. The fountain works in color and musical modes. On the square next to the fountain are constantly held various cultural events and festivals.
8. St. Andrew's Cathedral
St. Andrew's Cathedral is a monument of modern architecture, built with the money of patrons in 2001 in the style of "baroque". Today in the building of the cathedral are regularly held church services.
The total length of the bridge is over 550 m and the height is 54 meters. The bridge was opened in 1952, at that time it was the masterpiece of the architect Preobrazhenskiy, as previously the construction of such structures was considered impossible. The bridge has two-tiers, and consists of four arches. The lower tier is designed for pedestrians and private trucks. At the upper level there is an iron line.
10. Dnieper hydroelectric station
The Dnieper hydroelectric station was built between 1927 and 1939. In the 20th century it was the largest hydroelectric power station of the USSR. The dam forms a Dnieper Reservoir, at the same time which is the highway. In Ukraine, it is the only hydropower plant that is located in the heart of the city.
