Kiev (Kyiv) is the capital of Ukrane and Euro 2012 host city. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. With its unique attractions, numerous parks and gardens, modern art galleries and exhibition centers Kiev is the face of the country with a great future. 1. St. Sofia square

St. Sofia square

This is one of the central and most picturesque areas of Kiev. Here is located St. Sophia Cathedral with a great bell tower and the monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky. St. Sophia Cathedral was built in 1037 and is under UNESCO protection.

2. St. Michael Golden Domed Monastery

St. Michael Golden Domed Monastery

St. Michael Golden Domed Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries of Kiev. The fame to the main temple of the monastery - St. Michael's Cathedral brought its mosaics and frescoes. According to art historians, mosaics and frescoes of St. Michael's Cathedral have opened a new type of painting in the evolution of ancient Kievan Rus. In 1935 the cathedral was destroyed and rebuilt in the second half of the 90s of the 20th century.

3. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra

Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra

Kievo-Pecherskaya Lavra monastery was founded in the 11th century. Its construction lasted for 9 centuries. The monastery complex makes a great impression even today. Especially well known are the underground caves of the monastery. On any given day numerous domes can be seen from almost anywhere in Kiev. Most of the buildings of the Monastery were built in the 17-18th centuries and belong to the style of Ukrainian Baroque.

4. Andrew's Descent

Its name Andrew's descent received in the 18th century from St. Andrew's church, located at the beginning of the descent. Today, Andrew's descent is a place with a partially preserved architecture of 18-19th centuries. Along the streets there are permanent exhibitions and sales of paintings by artists and folk art products. Here you can also buy various souvenirs.

On the street Bankova is located house number 10 built (House with Chimeras) in the beginning of 20th century for the architect Vladislav Gorodetsky. The facade of the Chimerian House is decorated with images of mythical animals, in hunting and plant motifs. The structure is made in the style of "modern".

Mariinsky Palace was built in the late 17th century by Rastrelli. The Palace is located in the park bearing the same name. In the palace are held solemn state events – awardings, receptions, meetings of official delegations and the palace bears the title of being the "presidential" palace. Now the palace is closed for restoration.

7. Golden Gate

Golden Gates

Golden gate is the main gate of ancient Kiev. They were reconstructed during the construction of St. Sophia Cathedral. In the late 17th century the front gate had still parts of the fortifications, but in the middle of the 18th century they were destroyed and covered with earth. The gates "came to life" for the first time in 1832 during excavations, and were completely renewed in 1982.

Independence Sqare (Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Ukrainian) is the central square of Kiev. In 1991, the area received the status of being the principal one, and is named after Ukraine gained independence.

9. Mother Motherland

Mother Motherland

Statue of the Mother Motherland is the center of the National Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, established in Kiev on the Dnipro slopes. The height of Mother Motherland statue exceeds the height of the monument to the Statue of Liberty in America. The Motherland statue from the pedestal to the tip of the sword reaches 62 meters and the total height with the pedestal is 102 meters! In one hand she holds a 16-meter, 9-ton sword, in the other – a shield the size of 13.8 m and weighing 13 tons with a coat of arms of the Soviet Union. The frame of the monument begins at 17.8 m, where it goes further into a concrete well with a diameter of 34 m. The whole construction is fully welded and weighs 450 tons!

Today you can get to the top of the shield for 200 hrivnas (25 USD).

10. "Mamaev Sloboda"

Mamaeva Sloboda

This tract is located in the origins of the river Lybid, three centuries ago it belonged to the St. Michael Cathedral. Now it is a museum complex. Sloboda is a Cossack settlement of XVII-VIII centuries, a unique complex, even unique for Ukraine! It has more than 90 different objects.
