Monument to Sergey Isayevich Utochkin, the famous sportsman, motorcyclist and aviator, the conqueror of “the fifth ocean”, is situated in the heart of Odessa, in the Deribasovskaya Street, in the City Garden at the entrance to the cinema “Utochkino”. The solemn opening of the monument took place on September 2nd, 2001 and was timed to coincide with celebrating the 207th anniversary of Odessa.
Sergey Isayevich Utochkin (1976 – 1916) was born in Odessa and was one of the first Russian aviators, racing drivers, bicyclists and motorcyclists, one of the first Russian footballers, who had played for the Odessa British Athletic Club. He was one of the first persons in Russia, who started roller-skating, was the second aviator in Russia and achieved the highest results in bicycle race. In order to lend a financial support to the sportsman, his brothers decided to open one of the first cinemas in Russia named after Leonid Utochkin, – “Utochkino”, which had been working until now. The monument was opened even at the entrance to the cinema.
The monument is a bronze full-length sculpture of Sergey Utochkin, which represents the musing aviator, standing on the improvised balcony and launching a little paper plane. The authors of this project are Odessan sculptors V. Glazyrin and A. Tokarev.
