Day of Victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in World War II was and remains one of the most revered holidays in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
In the Berlin operation, in 1945, there were involved more than 2.5 million soldiers and officers, 6250 tanks and self-propelled guns, 7500 aircrafts. The losses were enormous: according to the official figures, the Red Army lost more than 15 thousand soldiers and officers a day. In total Soviet troops lost 352 000 people in the Berlin operation, including 78 thousand death toll.
9 May 1945 the plane “Li-2” with the crew by A. I. Semenkov landed on the Central Airport of Frunze and brought the capitulation act of Nazi Germany to Moscow. And on June 24 there was held the Victory Parade at the Red Square. Rokossovsky commanded the parade; Zhukov took command of the parade.
At the parade there were the consolidated regiments of the fronts in this order: Karelia, Leningrad, 1st Baltic, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st Belorussian, 1st, 4th, 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian, the consolidated regiment of the Navy. In the regiment of the 1st Belorussian Front there was the particular column of representatives of the Polish Army. Ahead of the consolidated regiments of fronts there were the commanders of fronts and armies, the Heroes of the Soviet Union bore the standards of the famous units and formations. The parade ended with the march of 200 standard-bearers who threw the flags of the defeated German troops on the platform at the foot of the Mausoleum.
Today the Victory Day is the official holiday and day off in Ukraine. Every year on this day in Kiev on Khreshchatyk Street there is held the parade in honor of the victory in World War II. A lot of people congratulate veterans on this holiday, after the parade, many people go to the Park of Glory, to lay flowers at the eternal flame and honor the memory of Soviet soldiers who died in this war.
Usually on this day there is the festive meeting on the territory of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. There are also concert halls, where perform people's groups. There also operate the field kitchens and everyone can taste the soldier porridge. Typically, this holiday ends with the celebratory fireworks.
