Among eight stadiums that are being prepared in the two countries to take European Championship 2012, Metalist Kharkov is one of the oldest. It was built due to the Soviet Commissar Anastas Mikoyan in 1925. Football field, running tracks and small platform for visitors were built by workers and employees of Locomotive Plant (now the State Enterprise "Malyshev Plant") according to the project b the architect Z.V. Permilovsky. The opening of the stadium was held on 12 September 1926. The celebration concluded with football match “Metalist” - Dnepropetrovsk (team), which ended in a draw - 2:2.
Metalist is a third name of the stadium, which it received since 1967, the first two - "Tractor" (since 1925) and "Dzerzhinets" (1949) (each of the following names the stadium got after another reconstruction).
The stadium experienced many renovations and buildings.
First reconstruction began in the postwar years, in 1949.
In 1961-1967 the stadium became the main sports arena of the city after the reconstruction of west tribune that made it possible to increase the number of seats for spectators to 10 000. There was carried out a full reconstruction of the football field and for the first time in the Soviet Union there was installed the drainage system.
When in November 1967 there was held a friendly match Metalist and Dynamo Moscow, the spectators were amazed. This stadium was then called in the newspapers as one of the best in Europe.
In 1970-1974 there was held the construction of the south tribune, there was erected a roof over the most of the seats (architect Y. Tabakov).
The reconstruction of the east tribune had been held since 1998.
Attendance record is 42 000 visitors (1980, September 23, USSR championship among the teams of the first league “Metalist” - "Tavria").
Reconstruction of the stadium in the program of preparation for Euro 2012 started in June of 2007, when it was razed the east tribune and there began the construction of the new one and the renewed construction of the south tribune.
The uniqueness of the stadium renovation project in Kharkov is in its endurance: the stadium roof can withstand an earthquake of magnitude 8 points.
The feature of the restoration of the stadium is the fact that the athletics tracks were saved, which makes the complex universal and versatile.
In 2008 there began the construction of the new roof. According to the project there were installed 24 major and 24 supporting abutments for the roof, which covers two-thirds of the stadium. The total weight of the roof amounted to 3,4 thousand tons.
In August 2009 on the stadium is set the flying camera-spider (Spidercam, Austria).
All technical, administrative and media facilities meet the UEFA requirements to conduct matches of UEFA European Championship quarterfinals.
After the reconstruction in 2009, the Metalist stadium has become a modern sports complex, it has a main and a spare football fields, six gymnasiums, health and recreation center, hotel for the athletes. During the renovation the number of seats has been increased by another 10 000, the arena was completed with the electronic scoreboard, powerful lighting.
New masts and modern lighting fixtures set on them that meet the requirements of UEFA, afford to hold the official competitions (including the matches of the European Winners' Cup) in the evening.
