Nikolaev region

Drawbridge in NikolaevNikolaev region is the region in the south of Ukraine, located in the northern Black Sea coast, in the Southern Bug river basin, formed on September 22, 1937.

The area of the region is 24.6 thousand square km or 4.1% of the country.

The industrial potential of the region is mostly concentrated in five cities of regional subordination. The city of Nikolaev is the centre of engineering, shipbuilding, nonferrous metallurgy, light industry and food industry. There are over 60 large industrial enterprises, one river and three sea ports, equipped with modern equipment. In the city of Yuzhnoukrainsk there is a nuclear power plant. The industrial specialization of the city Pervomaisk is determined by production of diesel engines and diesel generators, agricultural equipment, clothing, tinned milk and sugar. The city of Voznesensk specializes in the production of leather, footwear, clothing and food products, and the city Ochakov - canned fish.

The agriculture is the second branch of material production in volume, and first in the employment, which includes crop production, the major crops are cereals (winter wheat, spring barley, maize), industrial crops - sunflowers, sugar beets, melons, here are also developed the vegetable production, horticulture, viticulture and livestock meat and dairy. The region has a number of enterprises in agriculture and food production, which attracted foreign investment.

The region occupies the leading places in shipbuilding, manufacture of gas turbines, alumina, electric power, cultivation of grain and sunflower.

Among the main natural recreational resources of the region are ocean beaches over 70 km long, picturesque landscapes of the shores of the Southern Bug, and numerous storage ponds, springs of mineral water, resources of medicinal muds, especially Tiligul'skyi and Beykushanskyi estuaries, woodlands.

Leisure establishments in Nikolaev region are located mainly along the Black Sea coast and its estuaries – in the resort zones of Koblevo, Ochakov and Nikolaev. In Nikolaev region there are 250 sanatoriums and resorts, more than 120 areas of nature reserve fund, regional landscape parks "Kinburn Spit" and "Granite-Steppe Pribuzhie", part of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve, about 19 parks.

Attractions in Nikolaev region: historical and archaeological reserve "Olvia" (Olbia) in the village Parutino near Nikolaev, the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Olvia (Olbia) VI - VI century BC, an astronomical observatory built in 1821, and others.

February 19, 2009 the Ukrainian government adopted a decree on the implementation of investment projects on construction of wind power plants in the Crimea and Nikolaev region.
