South Ukraine is the area of Ukraine, which includes Odessa, Nikolaev, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. To the south area also belongs the Crimean peninsula. The largest cities of the area are: Odessa, Belgorod-Dniester, Izmail, Ilyichevsk, Sevastopol, Kherson, Kahovka, New Kahovka, Nikolaev, Zaporozhye, Melitopol, Berdyansk, Yalta, Alushta, Simferopol, Kerch and Feodosia.
The relief of the south area
The relief of the south area. The area is situated in the Prichernomorskaya lowland and on the Podolskaya upland. In the area dominate the steppes and forest-steppes. The major rivers are Dnepr, Dniester, Danube, South Bug, Ingul, Ingulets and Prut. There is also Kahovka storage pond in the area. In the coastal strip there are many freshwater and salty (Sasyk, Sivash) lakes and estuaries (Tiligulskiy, Beresanskiy, Dnepro-Bugskiy).
The area is washed with Black Sea and Sea of Azov in the south. The Crimea peninsula is situated on the south of Ukraine. In the south of Crimea are situated the Crimean mountains. The highest peak of the peninsula is the mountain Roman-Kosh with the altitude 1545 m. On the territory of the Crimea there are about 200 mountain rivers, the majority of which dry up in the summer period.
In the area are developed such kinds of industry as: ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy, machine building, energetics (there is situated the largest nuclear power plant in Europe - Zaporozhskaya), chemical and petrochemical industries, food and light industries, agriculture, tourist and recreational branches of economics. In the Crimea is situated also the Crimean gas deposit and Kerchenskiy iron-ore basin. The Crimean peninsula is rich in recreational and healing resources: unique muds, the largest juniper groves in Europe etc.
Objects of the nature-reserve stock
In the south area of Ukraine there are many objects of the nature-reserve stock, two of them have the status of republican meaning – Odessa catacombs and Mikhailovsky Yar. In the delta of Danube lies the unique biospheric reserve “Danube Plavni”. Here are also Tiligulskiy regional landscape park, landscape park “Granitno-Stepnoe Pobuzhye”, Priingulskiy park, National reserve “Khortitsa”, Black Sea biosphere reserve and reserve tract “Tricratskiy Forest”. In Kherson region lies the reserve “Askania-Nova”. The large number of reserves are situated on the Crimean peninsula: the Crimean natural reserve, Yalta mountain-forest natural reserve, natural reserve cape Martyan, Karagadskiy natural reserve, Kasantip natural reserve, wildlife reserves and monuments of nature.
